what's Big Straw? We're much more than just the straw in your bubble tea. Big Straw is the first and only student-run magazine that gives Carnegie Mellon students a forum to explore Asian American interests. Its mission is to empower students of all ethnicities to share their ideas, whether they be cultural, political, artistic, or personal. We strive not to define or reshape the Asian American culture, but to break down barriers and enable students to discover more about themselves and each other. During Spring 2004, Big Straw was born from a project for a class called Asian American Literature, taught by John Eperjesi at Carnegie Mellon. The resulting magazine inspired some students to carry the project to a grander scale, establishing the Big Straw student organization in 2005. why write? Language is the currency of ideas, and words release our inmost beings. Through your written words, Big Straw strives to uncover fragments of common themes among students, examine struggles, fight stereotypes, and raise awareness. Our magazine ultimately hopes to reveal what the Asian-American presence really brings to the Carnegie Mellon community, and the world community at large. |
